  2. I'm so glad I found you in Parade Magazine. Good for you and I hope I learn something as I'm not a good cook (by the way, I'm a grandmother). I am happy to read you are recovering and can now digest food. You're remarkable!

  3. I've got the Parade article right before me and you are a brave girl! I've also got something interesting to tell you, I was born with psuedo obstruction as well! What's more, I also couldn't eat before I got my intestines transplant! Of course, I was 19 when I got my transplant, I can only imagine how excited and scared you must have been! Keep going strong and don't let all those annoying doctor appointments get you down!
P.S. As if the transplant and condition isn't coincidental enough, your birthday's two days before mine. Happy Birthday!

We have 3 people in our family with intestinal disease so I can feel for some of what you go through. The youngest that has it is weaning off Prednisone and seems to be doing a bit better. It will be a lifetime of struggles but it will all work out.
I also have a blog. I am a Raw Food Chef and blog about my raw recipes. You should check it out. My children love my raw recipes and every morning they ask for their green smoothies :)

  22. Matisse, I am happy to know you. You share a lot in common with my 16-year old granddaughter, Aria, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. You were both born with a condition that made it impossible to get nutrients from food eaten by mouth. Aria had a bowel resection that resulted in her keeping only 1/6 of the normal small bowel. Until last June, she was fed intravenously (TPN) every night. As a youngster, she also had a gastro-tube. Her mom made a superbly designed "dinner" for Aria, using (you guessed it) wild salmon, vegetables and added supplements. This was very finely emulsified and put into a small pouch, protected by an ice pack, and worn on Aria's back. A tube went from the pouch to her stomach.
You also share making a BIG LEAP forward, having
its origin in Pittsburgh. In 2009, Aria visited the Center for Intestinal Transplant at UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), where the doctor and his nutritionist gave her the great PROMISE of being WEANED OFF the TPN. Slowly, over two years, it happened. (Although Aria had been able to eat for several years beforehand, she still had to have the TPN until weaned.) Now, she is free of IV lines. She enjoys her food (small and frequent meals and snacks throughout the day). If she has time, aside from her busy school schedule, she might join your blog. I will be sending her this message. Keep up your courageous determination to live a full and exciting life!
May God bless you and your parents!
    Merry Christmas, from Grandma Chris

  43. Matisse - I am so glad to see that you like seafood! I am trying to get my landlubber husband to eat squid, octopus, sushi, and other sorts of non-traditional (at least here in central NY) fishy things. How did you do the batter for the fish 'n chips? I make a puff batter using Bisquick and milk. It comes out light and crispy. I use the same batter for home made onion rings, broccoli, and also almost anything else that does well as a tempura. Keep up the good cooking!

  46. Matisse, you are a rock star! I just read the article in Parade. I admire your bravery and creativity. I am a mom and have 3 kids 12, 13, & 14. I started cooking when I was young and my youngest boy loves to cook too. I am passionate about food; preparing, presentation and BEST OF ALL eating good food! I also love, love, love the movie Julie and Julia and watch it over and over. The week after watching it for the first time I made so many recipes from that cookbook. My husband begged me to take a break from french food as we had run out of antacid chews! My mom gave me a copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking years before and now I use it all the time. My recent favorite recipe from that cookbook is the Chicken Breast Supreme with Mushrooms in a cream sauce (way yummy!).
Anyway, I will be following your blog from now on. Thanks for being a person others can look up to. God bless you

  47. Matisse,
Just read your article, my first time eating squid was at age 50! I tried to cook it myself 15 years earlier but overcooked it, so it could NOT be chewed. When I saw the box I thought it was ready to eat, but I did learn to prepare one, even though I couldn't eat it.

I have a forum you should check out, you could spend hours there. It is about food in Chicago and food in general.

  55. Hi there, a fellow food blogger here. So happy to see you like real food. I hope more kids your age will follow your lead. Start cooking and eat real food. You are one terrific kid and I bet your cooking is delicious. I too love seafood, especially shrimp, crab and lobster. Although I'm not much for squid. I have an 18 yr old son who stays home from school often due to his immune system. He has Lyme Disease. He however is not as creative as you. Keep cooking and keep sharing on this blog. I can't wait to read more of your blog.

  56. Hi Matisse! I read your article in Parade, and I love your blog. You are a very strong and brave girl, and your recipes are impressive! My daughter Adelaide is one yr old, and she has short bowel syndrome because her small intestine did not form properly before she was born. She still has a central line for TPN and an NG tube for feeds, but we are working on encouraging her to eat more. I will try some of your recipes-- maybe that will help her! Hopefully one day she will be cooking fettucine and eating calamari tentacles just like you! Addy's blog is hospitalmom.blogspot.com. Best wishes and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

We don't have cable so I can't watch shows, but I do watch a lot of cooking shows on our PBS stations. You are much more adventurous with food than I am! (My husband would love some of your seafood dishes!) Also, I live in Pittsburgh, so am very familiar with Wholey's, the Strip District (foodie heaven, right?!), and Children's Hospital. I am so happy you were able to get your treatment here, and hope you are all able to get a visa to stay in Pittsburgh. Best wishes for continued good health, and I'll be following you here, girl!

Your enthusiasm for life is obvious by your selection of calamari and shrimp as your first bites of food! May you and yours be blessed this Christmas. 78. Matisse, I so enjoyed your story in The Parade Magazine. You look very much like our 10 yr old grandaugter who also like to cook (though not as adventurously as you do). Julie and Julia is one of my all time favorite movies too. I always crack up when Julie has the 'meltdown' over the chicken.I look forward to following your adventures in cooking (I would have loved to have followed the real Julie on her blog when she was really cooking her way thru the Julia Child cookbook). I'm old enough to remember Julia Child when she was on tv the first time.I love watching cooking shows esp. 'Spice Goddess', Melissa D'Arabian and all the Top Chef episodes. Keep cooking kiddo; you've got a great spirit and an interesting life ahead of you. Cheryl

  80. Glad to see life is going so well for you, Matisse! I happened across your blog when my father called me to share your article in Parade magazine, and it caught his attention because your experiences are startlingly similar to my own. I suffered a mid-gut volvulus when I was 8 years old which necessitated the removal of my small intestine. This of course meant that I needed a transplant, and I spent a few years at the hospital in Pittsburgh waiting for a donor. This was back in the 1990s when small intestine transplants were still very experimental, but I eventually received a small intestine+liver+pancreas+stomach transplant at Jackson Memorial in Miami in 1998. I'm 27 now and completely amazed at how closely our experiences mirror each other!

I also went through a tremendous foodie phase when I was your age, and it was completely due to the fact that I couldn't eat (yep, I have the intravenous line and everything). People would ask me what satisfaction I derived from cooking foods and reading about foods I couldn't consume myself, but looking back all I can say is that it was incredibly therapeutic. Food is an important part of our lives, nourishing us and bringing us closer to the people with whom we share meals. I'm ecstatic to see you back in the game, and I wish you many years of kitchen trailblazing!

  87. Hi Matisse:
Now that you are even more "famous" from that Parade article I am sure people will want to send you all kinds of free stuff. Well add me to the list. I make a very unique artisan olive oil - it is smoked! It is super fun to cook with and I think you might like it. Ask your mum if I can send you a bottle or two. She can email me at anne@enfuso.com. Keep on cooking - someday I will be watching you on the food network!
    Best

  89. Matisse! I just read your story in Parade and viewed your blog. You are totally fantastic! I too, love to eat, but I'm not such a great cook. If only I'd cooked as a young girl, perhpas now I'd be able to whip at amazing dishes like you. :-) Keep cooking and learning Matisse and I look forward to eating at your restaurant one day soon! - Roz Barnes, Atlanta, GA

  90. I think it's great to see a kid your age so interested in food for any reason! If you have any sweet cravings, I'll help if I'm able to. I'm a Pastry Chef and Culinary School Instructor and I love to see people experiment with recipes.

  92. I forgot to say in the other message that I adore seafood, however, I have never eaten squid. I added your blog to my blogroll, located on my sidebar. Most of the templates I choose allow my blogroll to be viewed, but sometimes (in case you ever stop by, it's located near the bottom) and it's not showing never be dismayed because it will be there in a day or two.

Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  95. Hello Matisse I read about your blog in the Parade. I love Seafood myself...have you ever had a squid salad, its made here with seaweed and pretty good although I dont make it myself. I also love lobster and occasionally get live ones delivered from lobstergrams.com and before I cook them I let my dogs check it out and push it around (rubberbands still on the claws)its just fun to watch. I read your entire blog and will be keeping an eye out for more. You are awesome.

  97. Matisse,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us through Parade magazine. Several years ago I was forced to live off IV fluids for several months due to an autoimmune disease of my digestive system...so your story resonated with me. You are truly a lovely lady with so much energy to share with the world. I hope you will continue to pursue your love of food and continue loving life. I enjoy the Food Network as well (how can you not, right?) and hope that I can learn some tricks from you now too!
All the best to you and your family,
    Beth
